Glowing planets

I watch "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and during the opening credits, this bizarre if-Saturn-were-hot-lava planet shows up, both confounding me and fascinating me:

I was wondering if a planet can really look like that (I still am), when I came across this APOD image of Saturn, photographed in infrared:

Good old Star Trek. Of course the opening credits wouldn't be complete without a hot lava planet!

Crazy!
Nice to be able to rewind/pause so you can record the image for the internets.. ;)

I record the episodes and watch them at my leisure. I usually fast-forward through the opening credits, but must stop at the part where Gene Roddenberry's name appears. Must see his name or it's not Star Trek. :-)
